Belarus, Georgia committed to continuing constructive parliamentary dialogue

Belarusian MPs attach great importance to the development and strengthening of relations with Georgia, Chairman of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko said as he met with Georgia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Belarus Giorgi Saganelidze, BelTA has learned.

“We attach great importance to the development and strengthening of relations with Georgia,” Igor Sergeyenko noted.

The Speaker recalled the words of the head of state. During the credentials ceremony the Belarusian leader said that the traditions of friendship and mutual respect between Belarusians and Georgians and the shared chapters of history provide a solid foundation for the resumption of full-fledged cooperation between the two countries.

The chairman of the House of Representatives noted that the two countries continue to seek new ways to deepen cooperation across a wide range of areas: economy, trade, culture, and education. He emphasized the key role of parliaments in implementing initiatives.

Igor Sergeyenko recalled that in 2017 the National Assembly of Belarus and the Parliament of Georgia signed a joint declaration on cooperation.

“Our MPs have taken part in international observation of parliamentary elections in Georgia. A dialogue between friendship groups has been established," the Speaker continued, adding that the MPs held an online meeting recently to outline the areas of interaction.

Speaking on the topic of economic cooperation, the chairman of the House of Representatives noted that it serves as the driving force behind the development of bilateral relations, with a certain growth observed. For instance, last year Belarus made shipments of timber, pharmaceuticals, meat products, and other goods. A large network of Belarusian food stores operates in Georgia. This confirms that relations between the countries are developing. Moreover, there are good prospects for deepening cooperation in the agricultural industry.

The Speaker also identified agritourism as one of the most important areas for development. In 2025 Belarus is the seventh most important inbound tourism market for Georgia. Popular destinations for Belarusian travelers include not only Batumi, but also Kutaisi, Tbilisi, and other places.

Igor Sergeyenko also noted that many tourists come to Belarus for sanatorium and spa treatment. The Belarusian side is ready to offer services for organizing health-oriented leisure and also ecotourism, and to introduce visitors to the country's nature and historical sites.

The constructive interparliamentary interaction is ongoing, Valery Malashko, Chairman of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives on Healthcare, Physical Education, Family and Youth Policy, the head of the working group of the National Assembly of Belarus for cooperation with the Parliament of Georgia, told the media after the meeting. He drew attention to the steady dialogue between the friendship groups and noted that Georgia’s group includes long-standing friends, which lends a certain momentum and warmth to the interaction.

Valery Malashko also highlighted the intensification of economic ties in recent years. the economic cooperation group convened for a meeting in Tbilisi on 17 March. “We, as MPs, are committed to continuing the constructive dialogue. We are seeking new avenues for interaction and economic cooperation,” he said, also emphasizing the importance of social and humanitarian projects.
